GB Mann Scholarship Fund Update

About two months ago I asked you to support the ASCE Dallas Branch GB Mann Scholarship Fund. With interest rates on the fund being so low in recent years, the golf tournament, which we alternate hosting with the Fort Worth Branch, is the primary source of revenue for the scholarship at the present time. Educational Volunteer Opportunity at Dallas Museum of Nature & Science

The ASCE Educational Committee will be hosting an event at the Dallas Museum of Nature & Science on Sunday, June 17. ASCE will be doing a water-related program for children that day, in conjunction with the current Planet Shark: Predator and Prey exhibit. President's Message - May 2012

Greetings from San Antonio! OK, I am not in San Antonio any longer, but had a nice time at the Spring Meeting in April. The San Antonio Branch did a great job in organizing the event with professional development and ethics courses on Thursday, technical sessions on Friday, and student member concrete canoe races on Saturday. There were numerous activities scattered throughout the meeting including a very motivational speech during the awards luncheon by former San Antonio Mayor, Henry Cisneros. If you have never attended a Texas Section meeting or conference, I recommend it. It is worth it in any city, but it will be really easy within the next 18 months as two of the next three meetings are local.

•   Spring 2013, Corpus Christi, March 19-23, 2013
•   Fall 2013, Dallas, September 11-14, 2013

One of the many goals of Section Meetings is to promote the exchange of technical ideas through various presentations on a wide range of tracks such as Construction, Materials, Environmental and Water Resources, Transportation and Development, Geotechnical, Structural, Forensics, and many others. Not only can you attend these presentations, but you can submit a paper in advance of Section meetings and if selected have an opportunity to make a presentation on your paper. More information, and a Call For Papers can be obtained from the Texas Section website or by contacting the Section Vice President - Technical, Bob Pierry, at 214-725-8932 or bob@pierryconsulting.com. Bob is a member of the Dallas Branch, so you can also look him up at many of our Branch meetings.

In addition to the exchange of technical information at the Sections Meetings, our Branch routinely holds technical seminars following most Branch Luncheons. Due to the wide breadth of civil engineering, the topics vary considerably, but throughout the year you will find a topic that meets your interests, expertise, and needs.

At the joint Dallas/Fort Worth meeting in July, the selection of post-luncheon technical seminars will be increased to include six different topics plus an ethics presentation. This will be a great opportunity to dig a little deeper into a technical topic of your choice and to catch up on TBPE professional development requirements. So hold the date of July 9, 2012, at the Arlington Hilton. More information will be forthcoming and is included in this newsletter. Mr. Bolin, originally from Montana, has a BS in Civil Engineering from Montana State University. He began his career with TxDOT in Sherman Area Office of Paris District and spent three years in Design and two years in Construction. After that he enrolled in TxDOT's Masters Degree program and graduated with a ME in Civil Engineering with a focus on advanced planning from Texas A&M University in 2005. He moved to Fort Worth and accepted a position with North Region Support Center as P6 coordinator. Currently, he is the Consultant and Design Resource Manager for the North Region. Mr. Bolin is married with one child. He and his wife are looking forward to the birth of their second child.

Topic – The Implications of Minerals Exploitation on Dam and Levee Safety

Sands and gravels are used to make concrete and facilitate the construction of structures. In addition, sands and gravels are needed as free-draining backfill behind retaining walls. Low plasticity sandy clays are used to replace expansive clays below ground-supported floor slabs and to reduce the post-construction potential vertical movements of the subgrade. Traditionally, the sands, gravels, and select fill soils were present in river and creek channels and in the adjacent flood plains. These materials were mined until they were not profitable. The spoils created when mining these materials were placed haphazardly on the flood plains. With urban development, levees and dams have been constructed on these materials to protect the citizens of towns and cities from flooding. This presentation will outline the problems that past mining activities are creating for the existing levees and dams.

Speaker – Ms. Anita Brach, PE – US Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District

Ms. Anita Branch, PE, has worked for the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) for more than 25 years in several districts including the Huntington District in Kentucky and in the Fort Worth District in Texas. She has worked on numerous geotechnical and wetland projects associated with the Mississippi River, Trinity River, San Antonio River, the Lewisville Dam, New Orleans Levees, etc. Although she has performed the geotechnical investigations and provided foundation recommendations for numerous buildings and structures on military bases, she has a passion for determining the safety of levees and dams. Ms. Branch, PE, obtained her BS and MS degrees in Civil Engineering from the Virginia Tech University where she studied under Professor Micheal Duncan who was one of the pioneers of using the finite element method to study soil structure interaction.

GB Mann Scholarship Fund Update

About two months ago I asked you to support the ASCE Dallas Branch GB Mann Scholarship Fund. Since that time the Scholarship Committee has sent letters we sent to about 150 firms in the metroplex requesting support, held a fundraiser at a local restaurant, promoted a second fundraiser, and requested individual donations both during lunches at with registration. Thank you for all the individuals and the three firms that have donated to date.

However we still need your help. We are significantly below our goal to give out scholarships this year. Only with your support can we make this possible. Please consider giving on-line with your reservation or writing a check to ASCE Dallas Branch – GB Mann Scholarship Fund and mailing it to ASCE Dallas Branch, P.O. Box 541373 Dallas, TX 75354-1373. On May 10 in Lewisville, the Upper Trinity Conservation Trust and the University of North Texas are hosting the 2012 Conservation Development Symposium. Themed “Protecting the Watershed - - Right Where We Live”, the Symposium will focus on conservation development design principles and planning techniques, discuss the economic benefits of preserving open space from a developer’s perspective, and highlight the importance of watershed protection and land conservation. Along with many notable speakers, Mr. Randall Arendt will be the keynote speaker. Mr. Arendt is a nationally known planner, author and advocate of “conservation planning” and has designed several developments within the North Texas region. 2013 ASCE Pipelines Conference Volunteer Needed

The ASCE Pipeline Conference will be coming to the Metroplex in 2013. The Dallas Branch is searching for a volunteer to represent the Branch at the steering committee meetings for the upcoming event. The representative will also coordinate between the steering committee and the Branch.

The Pipelines Conference is expected to draw interest from all facets of industry i.e. owners, consultants, academia, contractors, and manufacturers. Participants are expected from around the world. Based upon the conference subject matter, previous ASCE Pipeline specialty conferences and other industry symposiums, it is expected that conference attendance and participation will be upwards of 600 pipeline and related professionals and 60 to 70 exhibitors.

Branch Scholarships

About G. B. Mann In the early 90s when David Schnurbusch was the Branch president, the Branch Scholarship Fund was established. In 1993, the Fund received a large boost from Mr. Mann when he contributed a large sum of his retirement investments to the Fund. Numerous Dallas area high school and college students have benefited from his large and kind endowment. He did not want any publicity for this contribution. An ASCE Past President and Life Member, George Boley Mann, received a degree in Civil Engineering from SMU. During WWII he worked in Ordinance Department at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland. He retired from Texas Department of Transportation after 34 years of service. He was active in ASCE and NSPE. He contributed to the construction of numerous Texas highways.
