September President's Message

Community Service and the Engineer’s Role in Society

Herbert Hoover, the 31st President of the United States, once said of engineering:

“It is a great profession.  There is the satisfaction of watching a figment of the imagination emerge through the aid of science to a plan on paper.  Then it moves to realization in stone or metal or energy...it elevates the standards of living and adds to the comforts of life. That is the engineer's high privilege...To the engineer falls the job of clothing the bare bones of science with life, comfort and hope.”

Why volunteer for community service?  One of ASCE’s primary goals is to enhance the image of civil engineering as a desirable, respected and rewarding career.  Volunteering in the community increases the public’s awareness of civil engineers and our role in society.  Through community service, civil engineers gain valuable leadership skills while giving back to society and growing as an individual and engineer.

The Dallas Branch offers opportunities for community service, typically organized through our Younger Member Committee or Education Committee.  Over the past year our Branch participated in a number of community service activities, including the Paper Bridge Building activity at the Museum of Nature and Science, Turtle Creek Cleanup with AIA, and Girl Scout Camp improvements.  Unfortunately, we have had very little participation from our membership in community service activities organized through our branch.  Why?  We would appreciate any feedback from our membership as to why we experience such low participation in those activities, and we welcome your suggestions to increase participation by our members.

I encourage you to enhance your leadership skills and give back to the community by volunteering for community service.  By volunteering in the community you will develop as an individual and a lifelong learner, resulting in a more well-rounded, multi-faceted engineer with a better understanding of the importance of our profession.

Rachel R. Hayden, P.E.
2009-2010 ASCE Dallas Branch President
