Celebrate National Mentoring Month with ASCE

This January, take those first steps toward self-improvement by celebrating National Mentoring Month with ASCE.  This month presents a unique opportunity for us, as engineers, to make a positive difference in our own lives, and perhaps more importantly, the lives of others.  Plus, ASCE makes mentoring an easy resolution to follow through on by using our eCareerMentor program, so you can communicate directly with your protégé online.

You may be asking, “Why mentoring?”  Mentoring creates a chance for you to share your experiences with budding engineers and guide them toward achieving their career goals.  Plus, you will gain new perspectives from a young engineer’s point of view, and in some cases, other specialties.

As a civil engineer and an ASCE member, you can play an integral part in advancing the success of our profession by investing time in its future leaders, a key component in ASCE’s “Achieving the Vision for Civil Engineers in 2025 – A Roadmap for the Profession.”  That’s why I’m proud that ASCE takes a leading role in providing numerous mentoring resources to ensure this vital transfer of passion and information occurs.  Take part in any of ASCE’s three mentoring opportunities: eCareerMentor, EWB-USA Project Mentors, or Section & Branch Mentoring programs.

These initiatives will ensure that the profession’s rising leaders are prepared to meet the challenges of the future.

Visit www.asce.org/mentoring for more information on these programs, to download ASCE mentoring resources, or to begin your mentoring journey either as a mentor helping young and transitioning engineers or as a protégé looking for guidance.

Make National Mentoring Month the first step in your mentoring journey to pass on your civil engineering passion.

Look for the Mentoring insert in this month’s issue of Civil Engineering magazine.
