Texas Stadium Demolition Information

Texas Stadium Synopsis:

With the impending departure of the Cowboys, the City of Irving negotiated an exit agreement with the team in January of 2007 to end their 38-year run at Texas Stadium in Irving. The Dallas Cowboys still call Irving home with the location of their headquarters and practice facility in Valley Ranch in Irving. Texas Stadium is located on a 78.6 acre tract of land situated between three major freeways that are undergoing major reconstruction as a part of TxDOT’s “Diamond Interchange Project”, that will modernize the freeway system in Irving and improve access to the area. Phase I includes raising Loop 12 to allow the new DART Light Rail Orange Line to parallel State Highway 114 into Las Colinas and eventually connect to DFW Airport by December 2013. Phase II includes the State Highway183 frontage and will tie into SH114, Loop 12 and SH183 both east and west. SH183 is currently planned for total reconstruction through Irving as well.

The focus of Irving has been to plan for the redevelopment of the site and at the same time preserve the history of Texas Stadium. Irving Community Television Network (ICTN) is producing a documentary to cover the history of the stadium, including the upcoming implosion. We have salvaged a number of lockers, seats, play clock, dedication plaque, goal posts and other memorabilia for future display in a planned Irving museum. On the redevelopment side, the City of Irving engaged the adjoining landowners to begin planning the ultimate redevelopment of over 400 acres of land surrounding the stadium site to capture the development potential of this uniquely situated site. The development will be planned to take full advantage of the planned DART Light Rail Transit Station adjacent to the property as well as its highway access with a high-density mixed use Transit Oriented Development. One of the initial plans was featured on our Web site www.CrossroadsDFW.com

Jacobs Engineering was hired in 2009 to develop the demolition plans and bids were received in August of 2009 for the demolition. The demolition is currently moving forward with removal of the lower seating bowl area and initial backfill taking place. The demolition contractor is currently abating the asbestos containing material in the stadium and is scheduled to be completed prior to April of 2010. Once the asbestos has been removed and the stadium stripped down to essentially concrete and steel, the stadium will be imploded. Final site clean up and final site grading will take place by the end of July 2010. Demolition progress can be viewed on our Web cam for Texas Stadium at www.cityofirving.org.
