EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF ENGINEERS WITHOUT

BORDERS (EWB) VISITS NORTH TEXAS

Cathy Leslie, Executive Director of EWB-USA, was the feature speaker at a special meeting of the North Texas Chapter of EWB - USA on April 16, 2009. Her presentation was titled, “Toward An Integrated Approach To Sustainable Community Development.” She focused on a small scale EWB-USA project in the City of Muramba in Rwanda, as well as a large-scale master planning project completed by an American engineering firm.  A short video honoring EWB-USA founder Dr. Bernard Amadei as the ENR Award of Excellence Winner for 2009 was also shown.

Tim Heydari and Jill Matus, members of the SMU Student Chapter of EWB-USA, also spoke at the meeting. They presented a project that the Chapter has been working on in Las Malvinas, Mexico. The project is a joint effort with the EWB-USA North Texas Professional Chapter, and the team is traveling to the community in October 2008. The group is currently investigating ways for the community to improve the water quality and increase quantity from existing sources such as rainwater catchment.

The meeting was hosted by Halff Associates in Richardson, with more than 50 members and visitors in attendance. There were also more than 20 viewers watching the simulcast at 8 company offices around the state.
