The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has determined that, due to seismic retrofit costs and other considerations; a new skyway and bridge will be constructed between Yerba Buena Island and the Oakland side with the end result being the replacement of the old steel truss bridge. The new bridge design is a Self Anchored Suspension Bridge with a 525’ tall steel tower support structure and bridge deck. Due to the unique design, size and load carrying requirements of the bridge, very high precision surveys were required for the overall project control network with unique survey solutions employed for non-traditional surveys such as required for the tower footings, rebar cages, and steel fabrication dimensional verification using industrial metrology equipment and analysis software. An overall discussion of the project and some of the project specific solutions will be presented.
